Here is the third piece I made for my daughter’s bedroom set. It is made of maple, with a small drawer and a lower shelf. My daughter likes the look of “wormy” soft maple, and hand selected some nice pieces laying around in my shop. The term “wormy” refers to the dark streaks found in this species, although these streaks are actually caused by the ambrosia beetle, and not a worm at all. Still, they do add an interesting character to the piece.
To tie the design into the rest of the bedroom set, the lower shelf has an insert of cane webbing and mitered corners, and the top has rounded corners like the bed frame (and the other side table).
The legs are tapered on the inside and rounded on the outside, with the bottom of the leg screwing into the top of the leg by means hanger bolts and insert screws.
I wanted to drawer to disappear into the apron, so there is a hidden apron behind the drawer front, which allows the drawer face to extend the full width and height of the apron. The back of the drawer front is beveled to keep it tightly sealed with the legs and table top when closed. The drawer glides are customer made – a simple runner slides along a rabbet on the inside of the drawer.

The main feature was the cane webbing on the headboard, but from a design standpoint, I wanted to make a bed that was easy to assemble and disassemble to make it easy to move.
I find it interesting that the folks that Jesus seemed to always get angry with when he was on earth were the religious leaders.

So, I had a lovely weekend in Auburn, Alabama this weekend. My wife and I visited our daughter, Hannah, who is a senior in college. Additionally, we did the usual parent stuff – we watched Auburn beat LSU in football, threw toilet paper in the trees after the game (it’s an Auburn tradition, seriously), took Hannah and a friend out for lunch, and in general just caught up on her life.
On Sunday, we had the pleasure of visiting church with her. Ironically, the lesson of the day was on being a good parent. Within that topic, the pastor was making a point about investing and taking care of our relationships with those around us who we treasure – our spouse, our children, etc. He used an expression which was new to me, but apparently has been around for a while – the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence, but it is always greener where we water it.
So I got to thinking, where do I water?
Do I water my relationship with God – what would that look like? Do I water my relationship with my wife? Do I water the weeds in my life, the very things that when they flourish choke out my soul?
It is amazing how backwards I get things sometimes. I am thankful for a weekend where I slowed down enough to hear that “still, quiet voice” caling me back into healthy relationship.
